Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or just have less nerdy friends than me, you should know that The Hobbit opens today. No one here has seen it yet, but we can say with a high level of certainty that it will likely contain many beards, some magic, some mountains, and a lot of walking. Hopefully though, we can look forward to not endearing the same self-indulgent end sequence of The Return of the King – a half hour (I’m guessing, here) of people waving at boats and crying and all that other stuff that happens at airports.
There are also a lot of dwarves in The Hobbit, and they all pretty much look the same. And they all have weird names (no, not sleepy or grumpy or dopey. Even weirder). If they were your friends, they would be the War and Peace characters of groups of friends.
Enter the Lord of the Rings Project. They’ve put together a handy flowchart that can tell you exactly which dwarf is which, based on things like strange donut beard shapes and general goofy-looking-ness. If you’re heading to the movie anytime soon, you might want to check it out before you go.
