Calgary’s Festival Hall unleashed, Saskatchewan sees cougars, Edmonton charities pinching pennies, and Winnipeg Jets play at home on January 19.

UnknownFestival Hall to be permanent home of Calgary Folk Festival

The Calgary Folk Music Festival (CFMF) has, after years of moving around the city, put down its roots at Festival Hall in the heart of Inglewood, a decision that has been eight years in the making.

CFMF’s staff and 1600 volunteers are excited about their new digs, a state-of-the-art multi-media performance space that will seat 180 comfortably.  Award-winning Vancouver-based Peter Cardew Architects designed it and some of its special features include a timbered ceiling, creativity in its architecture, and a geo-thermal heating and cooling system.

Festival Hall Unleashed is a community grassroots celebration that is free-of-charge. To celebrate the grand opening on January 23, Festival Hall will have DJs and live music playing on all three floors from 2:00 to 11:00 p.m.

Unknown-1 Cougar sighting in Saskatchewan

There has been a cougar sighting in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan and it is not the cosmopolitan drinking variety. Residents of the southeastern Saskatchewan town have sent out a warning by Saskatchewan Environment and the RCMP.

One particular cougar may just be looking to get educated, as he has been spotted more than once at Ecole Secondaire College Mattieu, a kindergarten to Grade 12 school.  The feline left a track of his huge paw prints behind the football field, and were found by Leo Michaud, who works in the school’s maintenance department.

“There have always been sightings here and there. They come, they go,” he said.

Parents have been informed of the recent sighting and were assured that precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of their children at all times.

Unknown-2 Edmonton charities want your pennies

The long run of the penny is coming to an end and for those that still have a stockpile, Edmonton charities want to take them off your hands. On Tuesday the Edmonton Food Bank launched their Pennies for People fundraiser with the goal of buying more nutritious meals for needy people.

“We’re encouraging people to donate their loose change to us because every penny counts,” said Catherine Williams, resource development assistant at the Edmonton Food Bank.

Twenty-two Servus Credit Union locations will have buckets to plunk your pennies into, and while there is not a desired monetary goal, all money raised will go towards purchasing food.

Other charities are pinching pennies that the Royal Canadian Mint will officially stop distributing on February 4th, such as the Edmonton Humane Society with their Pennies for Pets campaign.

Shawna Randolph, spokesperson for the Humane Society, says that volunteers have already put in many hours rolling the copper coins and have already tripled their goal of 500,000 pennies or $5,000.

Unknown-3Winnipeg Jets host Ottawa Senators on Jan 19th

Hockey fans across North America were chomping at the bit for the lockout to finally end and social media was all a buzz when a deal was finally reached early Sunday morning. The wait for Winnipeggers was probably more grueling than for some, after waiting more than 15 years for the return of an NHL team to call their own and finally seeing that become a reality last season.

The wait is finally over and Winnipeg fans might want to circle the 19th on their calendars. The MTS Centre and lounges will be filled with Jets jersey wearing noisemakers when the puck drops at 1:30.

Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavalec, who was charged with impaired driving earlier this summer, arrived in Winnipeg late Tuesday. He signed a five-year contract prior to the charge worth 19 million dollars, and while he is not expected to skate for the first home game, he can be seen practicing at the MTS Iceplex.
