2012, while some were waiting for the singularity, end of the world, or the triumphant return of something or someone, Photographer Christopher Friesen decided to take advantage of a seat sale on VIA Rail and headed west to Vancouver.

I’d taken the train there once before, but this trip happened to be a few days before the Grey Cup, which was in Vancouver. Not the group of folk I’d anticipated.
At the first stop after I’d boarded, I met a group of travelers, who had met each other during the Toronto to Winnipeg leg. They came from all over (Germany, Spain, Australia, Ontario), ages ranging from young to old. After the first few hours we were already admitting we wanted the trip to be even longer. So by the time any member of the group came to their final stop, it was not an easy goodbye.
Here are some photos I shot during that trip. If you haven’t travelled by rail in Canada you owe it to yourself to do so.
