Today in history: Ron Hextall scores a playoff goal

Twenty-four years ago today, Brandon native Ron Hextall scored the NHL’s first ever goaltender playoff goal (and the second goal of his career). The scene went down against the Washington Capitals during the fifth game of the first round of the 1988-89 playoffs.  Hextall’s Philadelphia Flyers were up 7-5 on the Capitals, and with the third period winding down, he saw his opportunity. Circling around the back of his net, Hextall, who was known for having a pretty wicked shot (and uppercut), ripped a wrist-shot over everyone’s head and down the length of the ice, finding the twine with only a minute left in the period.
