Suzy the mosasaur unveiled at Morden museum
Suzy is the fossilised remains of a mosasaur, a long extinct, marine reptile that lived during the Cretaceous period. She was found a few miles northwest of Morden, Manitoba, and was recently unveiled as a display at the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre. The CFDC, also located in Morden, said in a news release that, “The addition of Suzy creates an exhibit that is second to none in terms of mosasaurs and it allows our visitors to see two specimens side-by-side and up close and personal in a spectacular space.” Bruce the mosasaur also resides at the Morden facility, and holds the Guinness World Record for the largest such creature publicly displayed. Suzy and Bruce are believed to be more than 80 million years old. [Source: CBC]
Vanuatu devastated by Cyclone Pam
Vanuatu is an archipelago more than 1,700 kilometres east of northern Australia. It has been decimated by category 5 Cyclone Pam and is calling for “immediate” aid. President Baldwin Lonsdale said the storm, which struck Saturday morning, has destroyed all of the country’s recent development, and that everything will have to be rebuilt. Relief is starting to arrive, but no contact has yet been made with the regions more remote islands. The death toll stands at eight, but is expected to rise. Winds reaching 300km/h tore roofs off homes, flattened building, and crippled the country, comprised of about 60 islands, of its ability to communicate with each other or the mainland. Pam has weakened since, and is currently tracking along the eastern coast of New Zealand. [Source: BBC]
Robert Durst arrested on evidence appearing HBO documentary
Robert Durst, NY real estate scion, 71, was arrested in New Orleans over the weekend in connection to the disappearance of his acquaintance, Susan Berman, in 2000. Durst has also been suspected to be responsible for his wife’s disappearance in 1982. The arrest was reportedly made as a result of evidence shown for the first time during the final taping of an HBO documentary on Durst’s life: ”The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.” [Source: Death & Taxes]
Putin reappears, is not sick, attending a birth, or dead
Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, for those who don’t know, is alive and well, folks. On Monday he made his first public appearance in over 10 days, after rumours had him ill, attending the birth of his girlfriend’s baby, or dead. “It would be boring without gossip,” Putin told reporters, which was all that scrum got for details about his absence. He exited whatever cave he was occupying to meet with Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev in the Constantine Palace outside St. Petersburg. [Source: Washington Post]
